Venous Leg Ulcer
What is Venous Leg Ulcer?
A venous leg ulcer, colloquially known as an "open leg", is a chronic ulcer of the lower leg caused by persistent weakness of the leg veins. It is among the most common chronic wounds.
Causes.
In chronic venous insufficiency, blood pools in the leg veins. The elevated pressure impairs the supply to the tissue, so that the skin changes and an ulcer eventually forms, usually in the area of the medial malleolus.
Management.
Treatment is based on compression therapy together with professional wound care. In addition, methods as PLASMO®HEAL PRO which reduce the microbial surface load on the wound surface and the peri-wound skin can support a wound environment conducive to healing.
